Bradley’s Promise: Bridging the Gap for Young People's Lives
Aim:
Bradley’s Promise is dedicated to facilitating a seamless transition for children and young people with Muscular Dystrophy with life-limiting conditions and their families as they navigate the shift from children's to adult services.
Background:
Hello, I’m Sarah, Bradley's mom. The inspiration behind Bradley's Promise stems from the challenges my son faced during his battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, leading to heart and bowel complications that ultimately claimed his life at the tender age of 18. Bradley spent his last days in an adult end-of-life facility due to the difficulties in accessing vital support and services for transitioning from children’s to adult services. It's a situation that feels fundamentally wrong and urgently requires change.
I firmly believe that had Bradley been provided with an end-of-life experience in an age-appropriate environment, his passing and our last moments together would have been vastly different for him and our family, including his siblings.
At Bradley’s Promise, we advocate against expecting young adults with life-limiting conditions to access an end-of-life facility that isn't
age-appropriate. Therefore, our vision is to establish an Information Hub catering to young adults and their families aged 16 to 25 in need of
end-of-life care and support a resource currently lacking in the West Midlands.
As Bradley's mom, I made a promise to him that no other young adult should undergo the challenges he faced transitioning from pediatric to adult care services.
Hi, my name is George.
I am Bradley’s little brother, and I am 12 years old. When my mom told me she was setting up a charity in my brother’s name to help others like him who didn’t get the help they needed, I felt so proud. She said it would be a way to keep Bradley’s memory alive by making a difference in the lives of others.
I worked really hard to put the website together using all the information my mom gave me. When she saw what I had done, she told me it was fantastic and that she was so proud of me. She said Bradley would be proud of me too. Hearing that meant everything to me because I miss my brother so much.
I designed this website so that Bradley's legacy can live on, and so that we can help others in his memory. I also want to say a huge thank you to my second cousin Ben, who lives in Australia, for helping me make the website go live.
Thank you for supporting Bradley's Promise. Together, we can make a difference.
Founders of Bradley's Charity in 2022
In 2022, following the passing of my beloved son Bradley on April 2nd, I, Sarah, his mother, was left grappling with profound grief and a sense of purposelessness. It was during this dark period that I found solace and strength in the unwavering support of my dear friend Emma Morgan. Emma's boundless compassion and encouragement ignited within me the belief that I could transform my pain into something meaningful. Thus, inspired by Bradley's memory and Emma's unwavering faith in me, I founded Bradley's Promise, a charity dedicated to supporting families navigating the complexities of childhood illness transiting into adult services . However, just as Bradley's absence left an indelible void in my life, the loss of Emma to colon cancer in 2023 shattered me once more. Her absence is keenly felt, but her spirit lives on in the heart of Bradley's Promise, serving as a constant reminder of the power of love and friendship to inspire change and bring hope to those in need.
